The 30-Second Web Design Test—Can Your Web Site Pass It?
That old adage “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression” is especially relevant to the world of web design. Not only will viewers not return to your site if your web space does not make a good first impression, but your viewers are likely to start judging your web site right away. While we may have been taught to look past first impressions in people and while we may think it’s good to give someone a second chance, in cyberspace these niceties do not exist. If your web site fails to make a good impression on a viewer, that’s it.
How much time do you have to make a good impression with your web site? 30 seconds or less. If your web site creates a bad impression in that little amount of time, your viewer is likely to click his or her way to a new web site, leaving yours behind for good. 30 seconds is not a lot of time, so you will want to make sure that you do not waste any precious amount of that. You will want to:
1) Get rid of anything that slows down your download time. Find a slow computer (an internet cafe is a good place for this). Start a stopwatch and start downloading your web site. After 30 seconds, stop and look at what you see. If your home page has not loaded yet, you are losing visitors. Get rid of large images, animation, and any thing else that is slowing down your speed. In many cases, opening flash presentations fit into this category.
2) Look to see where your eye goes. Sitting in the internet cafe with your stopwatch, look up after 30 seconds – where does you eye go? Is that where you want your visitor’s eye to go? If not, you better get back to the drawing board. You only have 30 seconds – so you want to get your message across instantly.
3) Test and test again. Test your website on older computers, Macs, mobile devices, computers with different operating systems – anything you can. Does your website load correctly? Do the links work? If there are any glitches, fix them fast.
4) Check the annoyance factor. Ask colleagues, company employees, your clients, that new temp worker – what is the website like? Is there any way to improve the company web site? If you hear the same comment more than once, it is time to investigate. If everyone hates the navigation menu, change it – even if you adore it.
