Is SEO (search engine optimization) Outdated?
Some companies are gleefully predicting the demise of search engine optimization (SEO) and keyword rich content. Some claim that the advent of pay-per-click advertising and other ways of getting a web site to the top of search engine rankings with no keywords at all will make search engine optimization obsolete. However, this is not the case.
Instead, what has happened is that two forms of search engine optimization have developed. Rather than just one way of getting your company web site to the top of search engine rankings, there are now two methods:
1) Organic SEO. In this type of search engine optimization, you create content for your web site that uses specific keywords in order to encourage search engines to place your web site high in their search engine rankings.
2) Paid SEO. In this type of search engine optimization, you pay for programs that allow you to get your company web site to be featured in the “sponsored links” section of search engine results. In most cases, this section appears at the top of the search engine rankings.
While paid SEO guarantees you a spot near the top of search engine rankings, you simply cannot rely on this exclusively. As web surfers get more web savvy, many of them simply ignore sponsored links and anything that appears to be an advertisement. Secondly, paying for sponsored links can quickly add up. Pay-per-click can cost thousands of dollars a month for the best placements and the best keywords. Once your budget runs out, your company web site will no longer be featured in the sponsored links area.
Many smart companies are now using both types of search engine optimization to push their profitability even higher. When you use both forms of search engine marketing, you reap double benefits. If you're using both sponsored links and organic SEO, it is possible that your web site results will appear twice on the same page, convincing more customers to click on your site rather than on the competitors. Plus, in cases where the sponsored links fail to place your site first – such as when your budget runs out or you are out bid -- organic SEO can still help you achieve high search engine rankings. Using both simply allows you to enjoy more clicks and more traffic.
